We know that captions are not always available on the resources you might want to use in class. But Do-It-Yourself (DIY) captioning is quite easily done, especially if you’re looking at using on-demand video resources.
There are a number of tools that allow you to create captions from scratch and make simple DIY captioning part of your lesson planning. We recommend the free DIY captioning site Amara as the best and easiest to use.
Although captioning can be quite time-consuming, once you’ve learnt how to use Amara, it should only take you about half an hour to caption a five-minute video, depending on the amount and complexity of the dialogue.
We’ve prepared a guide on how to caption a video using Amara.
